Pumpkins are natural materials, and an outdoor display changes with its surroundings. Plan for the season you want to enjoy rather than relying on a guaranteed number of display days.

Watch the weather
Rain and hot sun can contribute to decay in decorative pumpkins and gourds. Carved pumpkins also deteriorate in warmth, so leave carving closer to the occasion. Consider a sheltered position and keep an eye on the display as conditions change.
Handle with care
Support a pumpkin from underneath instead of lifting it by its stem. A broken stem can leave it more vulnerable to early spoilage. Notice soft spots or damage when checking the display.
Give mums separate attention
Flowering mums need watering attention, especially in direct sun. Their needs differ from the pumpkins beside them; check the plants rather than treating the whole arrangement as one material.
